High-Performance .NET Core: Caching, Async, and Reducing Server Load

When building enterprise business applications in .NET Core, you quickly realize that the bottleneck is rarely the framework itself, but rather how you manage I/O and memory. During my time building data-heavy dashboards for Cynergy Solutions, we faced a critical challenge: a dashboard rendering predictive time-series analysis was bringing the server to its knees.

The Async/Await Trap

Many developers sprinkle async/await across their controllers and assume the application will scale magically. However, if your asynchronous calls are ultimately bottlenecked by a synchronous database lock or inefficient Entity Framework LINQ queries, you are just delaying the thread starvation.

We optimized our pipeline by:

  1. Compiling Queries: Pre-compiling our heaviest EF Core queries to eliminate translation overhead.
  2. Asynchronous Projections: Only pulling the exact columns needed into memory before executing .ToListAsync().

Aggressive In-Memory Caching

The true performance multiplier was implementing distributed caching. We moved computationally expensive data aggregations (like the time-series analysis) out of the critical request path. By utilizing IMemoryCache for localized fast-retrieval and Redis for distributed state, we doubled the dashboard’s response speed and reduced the overall server load by 5×.
