Beyond Crashlytics: True Mobile Observability

Most mobile teams integrate Firebase Crashlytics, look at the 99% crash-free session rate, and declare their app stable. As a Senior Engineer, you know that this is a dangerously incomplete picture. A crash-free app that takes 8 seconds to load a screen or drains the battery in an hour is still a broken app.

The Observability Gap

Crashlytics tells you where the app died. Observability tells you why the user is frustrated. To achieve true observability, we need telemetry that spans the client and the backend seamlessly.

Implementing Distributed Tracing

When a user taps “Pay” in a POS system, a span should open on the mobile client. That span ID is injected into the HTTP header of the request. The backend picks up that span ID, processes the payment, and logs the database latency.

When you look at Datadog or New Relic, you don’t just see a “slow API endpoint.” You see the entire journey: User Tap (UI Thread) -> JSON Serialization -> Network Latency -> BFF Processing -> Database Lock -> Response Parsing -> UI Render.
