Designing Offline-First Mobile Architectures
In a modern enterprise application, telling the user “Please connect to the internet to use this app” is a failure in user experience. Whether it is a chauffeur management system like RideCentric traversing dead zones, or a high-traffic VALT POS experiencing a network outage, your app must remain functional.
The Local Database as the Source of Truth
The foundational rule of offline-first architecture is that the UI must only read from the local database (e.g., ObjectBox, Hive, SQLite, or CoreData), never directly from the network.
- Read Path: UI subscribes to a local database stream (using Combine, Flow, or StreamBuilder).
- Write Path: UI writes mutations to the local database immediately (Optimistic UI).
- Sync Engine: A background service listens for local changes and queues them for synchronization with the remote API when a connection is available.
Conflict Resolution Strategies
When offline devices come back online, conflicts are inevitable. If a POS terminal modifies an order offline, and a Kitchen Display System (KDS) modifies it online, who wins?
- Last Write Wins (LWW): Simple, but often leads to data loss.
- Timestamp Versioning: Relying on server-side timestamps to dictate the freshest data.
- Operational Transformation / CRDTs: The gold standard for collaborative environments, ensuring all changes mathematically converge without data loss.
Moving to an offline-first paradigm drastically increases complexity, but it is the defining characteristic of a truly resilient mobile application.
